A family lawyer in Wollongong receives pornographic Christmas cards from a client’s ex-partner.

Another is told in court: “I know where you live.”

These are symptoms of a critical gap in Australia’s response to coercive control that extends beyond victims, to those who support them.

As Queensland criminalises coercive control and NSW reviews its pioneering laws after just six months, new data reveals the challenges of turning legislation into protection.

Winterbourne Woman | Ecofeminist Conceptual Photographic Series

In a place where the rain-swelled streams tell stories of plenty and song, this series traces the breath of water as it meanders through the rainforest, the escarpment, and finally to the sea. Minnamurra, "plenty of fish", is a testament to the ancient practices of women who paddled nuwi canoes, fished with chant and care, and lived by the rhythm of water and earth. Here, in the fleeting flow of a winterbourne stream, we find the echoes of this knowledge and strength, held, and carried by women, past and present.

Young Australian voters aren’t checking out, they’re hacking the system | UOWTV

Voting for a minor party isn’t a dead-end, according to young Australians who are planning on using their first preference to be heard, not just counted.
When university student 23-year-old Alex Ashton heads to the ballot box on May 3, she’s not thinking about party partisanship, she says she is thinking about survival.
“It’s so expensive for young people to even dream about buying a house, paying off HECS, or feeling financially stable,” she said.
“No politician I’ve seen is really committing t...

Documentary: Drag is the Word

From the rhetoric of Frankie Valli but in a different time and place, ‘drag has meaning, drag is a motion, drag is the way we are feeling.’ For some, drag is a necessary form of artistic self-expression; a visible, fun and flamboyant spectacle of queerness. For others, drag is more pointedly a movement and the birthplace for otherised identities, to question the heteronormative ideas that fly in the face of gender's proven complexity. But discovered, is that the history and landscape of drag artistry is far more diverse and complex than it may appear…

Drag artists, queens and kings, transgender and non-binary persons alike, discuss their journeys from amateurism to stars, from small-town to centre stage; and come together to dance, bend and blur the very beautifully flimsy lines that exist between antiquated gender stereotypes.

“It’s going down to the wire” – How the tight race for Gilmore, shows ‘parachuting in’ candidates can do damage | UOWTV

With just 140 votes lifting the Liberal Party’s last remaining hope Andrew Constance ahead of Labor’s Fiona Phillips, the race for the seat of Gilmore on NSW’s South Coast has shown the Coalition that overriding local branch favourites can lose them an election.

The Liberals’ last chance at a seat has landed in the lap of former NSW Transport Minister and Member for Bega Andrew Constance, as he continues to lead the Labor incumbent 52,323 votes to 52,184.

These figures equate to a slim two-par

Wollongong Black Lives Matter Protestors to March at Unauthorised Rally in Defiance of Court Ruling

The Supreme Court has granted the NSW Police application to prohibit the Wollongong Black Lives Matter protest on Saturday, citing significant COVID-19 health and safety concerns.

If I Had Known

The class full of keen, wide-eyed students all scurry to their seats at the sound of the bell. As the teacher begins the lesson, all listen attentively, and all eyes remain fixated on her as she speaks. All but one pair of eyes. 8-year-old Georgia’s eyes peer mesmerisingly out the window. Her mind drifts, for perhaps a little too long. But she doesn’t know why, no one did.

The ethico-legal paradox of The Afghan Files

To what extent are journalists legally and ethically compelled to live-tweet on active criminal investigations or matters of the court?

For journalists, despite the obligation to broadcast and distribute accurate and truthful stories, there is also an equally important obligation to respect the law, confidentiality and privacy.
