Creative and Journalistic Intent

As I stand at the very premature beginning of a career that excites me, I believe this challenge fuels my resolve to carve a space where creativity and journalism meet, where the stories we tell are not just heard but felt, and where every voice, however unconventional, can find a home.

I would love to test and try my skills in a form of journalism or media-making that is not just informative but one that leverages a full spectrum of creative multi-platform media and visual/audio storytelling that can reach and challenge different audiences, wherever they are, no matter the world views or circumstances they are confined to.

I believe the prevailing narratives in journalism, or the ideas that the public holds about journalism in general, paint a picture of the media as a domain of the cynical, where stories are commodities, voices are vying for dominance, or every word masks a bias. But I see a very different potential. A space where media can be a confluence of diverse voices, and where storytelling and journalism are not bound by any creative formula but are a limitless, community-driven expression.

"Different is better than better," Sally Hogshead.

Sally's is my favourite philosophy I stumbled upon in the last five years of my studies. I interpret Sally as saying that we should reject the notion that improvement is the sole metric of value. Instead, I believe our contributions to the greater media operation, of which we are a part, should be measured by the authenticity of our conviction and perspectives, no matter how different they are from the next journalist or media-maker, and the connections we make along the way and can foster through our narratives.

Diversity and Accessibility

Studying journalism from 2020 to 2024, I’ve watched the degree and media environment navigate the digital age and how our storytelling tools have evolved not just in the real world, but in educational and teaching formats. This new-age, multi-media journalism offers unprecedented opportunities to engage with audiences across a spectrum of human experience.

My vision is rooted in the belief that every individual, regardless of background, ability, neuro-diversity, or circumstances, holds an inherent right and ability to access and comprehend the world around them and understand media literacy. This is what drives my ideas about leveraging the full array of technology at our disposal to create content that is accessible, comprehensible, and impactful.

I don’t believe media, news, and stories to be a hobby or an interest; I think it is an essential component of the human experience and fundamental for collective awareness and empathy. Continuing to address these barriers and limitations to media literacy and consumption is what piques my interest in the near future, and what I believe I can contribute to in my career.

My approach is characterised by fluidity across platforms and recognising the unique strengths and audiences each medium offers. From traditional print, all the way through to broadcast, I’d like to think more about how we can master the art of storytelling in diverse formats, and how we can best tailor stories to suit the medium and the audience with purpose.
